Peter Blake Casts A Wary Eye on A Young Newcomer

Lillie
highgate cemetery, london.
these two images are part of a project i started several years ago but never finished, invoking the memories of some of the many thousands of people buried in local churchyards. the intention was to research - and bring to life - the stories behind the men, women and children who, in many cases, have been long forgotten. i soon realised that taking the photographs was the easy part. the research required to bring their stories to life in the end proved too daunting. i never did find out who lillie was.

"don't interrupt the sorrow"
I’ve been back several times to photograph this gravestone at Aldbury in hertfordshire, but I’ve never been able to create an image which better evokes the sense of melancholy in this one. It marks the grave of a child who died at the age of 7 in 1945.
